Historic Sites of Manitoba: Queens Hotel / Gibbs Brothers Garage and Service Station (109 Railway Avenue North, Pilot Mound, Municipality of Louise)

Formerly located at the northeast corner of Railway Street North and Beverage Avenue in Pilot Mound, in the Municipality of Louise, a two-storey wood frame building was built for hotelier Charles Carruthers (?-?) who operated it as the Queens Hotel. It was eventually sold to Jack Dew (?-?) then in 1906 to Arthur Henry Gibbs (1872-1941).

Closed in 1916 due to the First World War, in 1918 following the return of Arthur Gibbs’ son William “Bill” Gibbs from the war, the former hotel was converted into an automotive repair garage and service station. The front portion of the main floor housed a showroom for selling Ford automobiles while the rear had space for auto repair. The second floor housed office space for the business. Two gasoline pumps on the street in front of the building sold Imperial Oil Limited (later Esso) brand gasoline.

The business closed in 1982 and the building was demolished in the late 1980s.
