Historic Sites of Manitoba: Imperial Oil Service Station / McCartney’s Service Station (500 William Avenue, Winnipeg)

Formerly located at the southwest corner of William Avenue and Isabel Street in Winnipeg, a one-storey wood frame, sheet metal, and stucco building, measuring 10 feet by 14 feet, was built in 1923 by the construction firm of J. McDiarmid and Company, at a cost of about $800, as a service station for Imperial Oil Limited.

The building originally had two gasoline pumps and a small office for the service station attendant. Later known as the McCartney’s Service Station, operated by proprietor William J. McCartney, the building has been demolished. The site is now occupied by another commercial building.
