Historic Sites of Manitoba: Graham Block (103 Railway Street South, Pilot Mound, Municipality of Louise)

This two-storey stone building at the southwest corner of Railway Street and Moffat Avenue in Pilot Mound, in the Municipality of Louise, measuring 28 feet by 50 feet, was built in 1889 for the hardware, implement, and undertaking business of Dougald Brown “D. B.” Graham (1853-1939). In its original configuration, the structure contained a single retail space on the main floor and a single residential apartment on the second floor. Eventually, it was extended along Moffat Avenue.

The business was later carried on by his son Gordon McKenzie Adlum Lovatt Graham (1894-1957), grandsons Victor Alan “Vic” Graham (1923-1998) and Kenneth Gordon Graham (1925-2009), and great-grandson Fred Gordon Graham. In 1954, it was described as the “oldest, continuous hardware business in rural Manitoba”. In January 2009, the four-generation business was sold to another firm.

At the time of an April 2025 site visit, the building was vacant, surrounded by a fence. It was demolished in June 2025.
