A two-storey brick and concrete motel on Portage Avenue in Winnipeg was designed and constructed in 1963 by its owner, James Edward “Jim” Stanier, at a cost of about $140,000. The building contained 22 heated and air-conditioned units, each with telephone and television service and wall-to-wall carpeting. Six of the units had fully equipped kitchenettes. It was the first such building in the city to be operated completely by electricity with electrical outlets for automobiles parked in its paved parking lot. The motel opened on 25 October 1963.
