Historic Sites of Manitoba: Piney School / Acland School No. 2214 (RM of Piney)

Known initially as the Piney School District when it was established formally in January 1930 from part of the Sunbeam School District catchment area, it was renamed the Acland School District in the months that followed prior to the start of the fall school season.

The district operated a one-room schoolhouse at a three-acre site near the southeast corner of SE 9-1-10 East in the Rural Municipality of Piney. The structure measured 19 feet wide by 29 feet long. It became part of the Piney Municipal School District No. 1360 in May 1936 whereafter the school operated as Ackland School as part of a municipal school district. Around early 1939, the teacherage of the Overton School No. 1663 was brought here.

The Piney Municipal School District was later merged into the Boundary School Division. Around June 1967, the schoolhouse and its remaining contents, along with the boys’ outhouse, was sold to local resident John Perosowich for $315 and everything was to be removed from the school grounds by October 1967.

Among the teachers of Acland School were Hugh Robert McCaw (Fall 1930 - Spring 1931), Ann J. Mihaychuk (Fall 1931 - Spring 1932), Bertha Mae Elliot (Fall 1932 - Spring 1933), Nicholas Kosowan (Fall 1933 - Spring 1934), ? (Fall 1934 - Spring 1943), Manuel Kolybaba (Fall 1943 - Spring 1944), ? (Fall 1944 - Spring 1953), John Chobotar (Fall 1953 - Spring 1954), and George Gushuliak (Fall 1954 - Spring 1958).
