The St. Mary’s la Prairie Anglican Church on Second Street SW in Portage la Prairie was constructed in 1898. It is the third church built for the Parish of Portage la Prairie, which was founded by Archdeacon William Cockran in 1853. Archdeacon Cockran was an important missionary whose work at the Red River Settlement helped to establish the Anglican Church in the West. The church, designed by Winnipeg architect Henry Sandham Griffith, is one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in Manitoba. The adjacent Parish Hall was built in 1913.
Among the other clerics who served at St. Mary’s la Prairie were Henry George (?-?), Charles Norman Fitzgerald Jeffery (1888-?), P. V. Lee (c1970), and Colin Clifford Chapman (1975-?).
