Historic Sites of Manitoba: Dr. Jose P. Rizal Monument (55 Waterford Green Common, Winnipeg)

Like the adjacent Winnipeg thoroughfare and a nearby park bearing his name, this monument commemorates Filipino national icon Dr. Jose P. Rizal (1861-1896) who played a key role in the country’s 1898 independence from Spanish rule.

Set on a Tyndall stone base are four commemorative plaques, three of which are inscribed with notable quotes from Rizal, and topped with a sculpture of Rizal created by Peter Sawatzky. The monument was unveiled by the Knights of Rizal (Winnipeg Chapter) on 24 August 2020.
