Historic Sites of Manitoba: Holly Apartments / Roxy Apartments (552 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg)

This three-storey brick block on Sherbrook Street in Winnipeg, measuring 49 feet by 124 feet, was designed by architect Thomas Logan Kerr and built in 1914 by contractor Lindal Josafat Hallgrimson for owner J. E. Grierson at a cost of about $60,000. The building contained 21 apartments in its original configuration. It is speculated the building was named Holly Apartments for Bjorn “Holly” Hallgrimson (1908-1981), eldest son of the contractor. Around 1930, it was renamed Roxy Apartments.
