Historic Sites of Manitoba: Audrian Apartments / Craigavon Apartments (165 Ethelbert Street, Winnipeg)

This two-storey brick block on Ethelbert Street in Winnipeg was designed and constructed in 1927 by contractor Bentley Taylor. Two local residents sought a legal injunction during its construction, arguing that a 1905 caveat on the land title prevented having an apartment block on the site. The builder claimed the building was not an apartment block, judge John Philpot Curran agreed, and construction was completed.

The caveat was removed by the provincial legislature in 1935 and the building was finally acknowledged as a five-apartment block. Later that year, renovations added a sixth apartment in its basement. It began to be advertised as the Audrian Apartments but was renamed the Craigavon Apartments around 1954.
