Memorable Manitobans: Douglas MacLeod “Doug” Gourlay

Civil servant, MLA (1977-1981), MLA (1981-1986).

Born at Oak River on 1 December 1929, one of three sons of Andrew Judson Gourlay (1878-1952) and Catherine McLellan (1883-1988), he received a BSc degree in Agriculture from the University of Manitoba (1952) then he worked for the federal Department of Citizenship and Immigration until 1956. He was a Manitoba Agricultural Representative at Pilot Mound (1956-1963), The Pas (1963-1966), and Swan River (1967-?) and he served as President of the Manitoba Agricultural Representatives Association (1969). He was a Swan River councillor (1972-1974) and Mayor (1975-1977), and owned a drive-in restaurant.

Elected to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly in the 1977 general election, he was re-elected in 1981. He served as Minister of Northern Affairs (1979-1981) and Minister of Municipal Affairs (1979-1981). He was defeated in the 1986 general election. In retirement, he and wife moved to Brandon.

He and wife Audrey Porter of Miami had four children, including Audrey Joan Gourlay Nemetchek (1954-2022).
