Leonard “Len” Derkach

Educator, MLA (1986-1988), MLA (1988-1990), MLA (1990-1995), MLA (1995-1999), MLA (1999-2003), MLA (2003-2007), MLA (2007-2011).

Born at Rossburn on 21 January 1945, one of four sons of Nicholas Derkach (1908-1998) and Minnie Kalyniak (1916-2008), after teaching training he taught at Rossburn School (1970-1974). He was elected to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly at the 1986 general election and was re-elected in 1988, 1990, 1995, 1999, 2003, and 2007. He served as Minister of Education (1988-1989), Minister of Education and Training (1989-1992), and Minister of Rural Development (1992-1999). He did not run in the 2011 general election but served as Reeve for the Municipality of Russell-Binscarth (2015-2018). In recognition of his community service, he received a Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2002).
