This municipality was named by Roman Catholic missionary Charles Camper for St. Lawrence (St. Laurent in French). From 1944 to 1974, it was under the control of a Resident Administrator. It was restored to full municipal status on 22 November 1974 and its Administrator was replaced with an elected Reeve and six Councillors.
