By 1882, the nearby Elliot settlement contained about fifteen farmers, each with over 100 acres under cultivation.  Not only were many settlers coming, but they were breaking land quickly and buying recently-invented farm equipment so as to improve production.

Gorrie, Charles C.
Biography: b. 1885 (Brandon). M. Evelyn Thornber
Claims:  Pharmacy Grad. Purchased the Drug Store from Dr. Vanstone in 1909. Operated it until 1946. Adjuster for the Mutual. Chairman of the Wawanesa and District Hospital Board. Mayor for 22 years. Master of the Masonic Lodge. Noble Grand of the I.O.O.F.  Director of the Mutual.

Claims:  Learned candy-making trade in England. Came to Canada in 1889, established a store in Souris City. Moved his store from Souris City to Wawanesa in 1890. (one of five store buildings moved from Souris City) Purchased Wawanesa’s first Bakery from Mrs. E. Burke in 1891. Also ran a boot shop and farm. He was instrumental in bringing many entertainment groups to town in the early years. First president of the Wawanesa Band. Est General Store in 1918.

Scott, William.
Biography:  From Toronto
Claims:  Owner and promoter (with son William J.) of the town of Souris City one of the more notable, “Paper Cities” of the Manitoba Boom in 1882. They arrived sometime after October 1880 and bought land from the CPR. A survey of the town site was prepared by J.W.Vaughan, and registered Nov. 14, 1881. The company soon became the Toronto, Manitoba and North West Co. Early in 1882 the Winnipeg Daily Sun reported that, ”Mr. Scott, Manager of the Toronto and Manitoba Northwest Land Company, sold last evening by private sale $1100 worth of lots in Souris City.” The next month an ad offered 320 acres adjacent to Souris City for sale.

Biography:  Died 1929
Claims:  Came to Wawanesa 1889 from Lanark ON. Erected the first building in the town that would become Wawanesa, a General Store and Post Office and living quarters above. Built the Story Block in 1898 and operated a grocery until 1903. In 1906 he owned a tinsmithing business and sold furnaces. First Treasurer of the Cemetery Co. First Methodist Church service held in his home in 1889.
