Aborn, Mr.
Biography: England
Claims: Employed at the Souris City brickyard. Drowned while
swimming in the river ca. 1884. First death in the Souris City
community.

Banting, Thomas Edward Meredith
Biography: From Newton Ontario
Claims: One of the first big farmers” in the district. Arrived in
1887, his father Benjamin was already settled. Banting Siding and
Elevator established near his home. He built the large house that
remains a landmark. One of the first Canadian farms to experiment with
a cement-floored barn floor.

Clark, Alexander.
Biography: Essex County ON.
Claims: First came west in 1878. Returned to Souris Mouth in
1882. Became postmaster at Souris Mouth. His family left good accounts
of their life and times.

Cory, Richard Frederick (Fred)
Biography: Born Port Hope ON. Ca. 1865. Married Ethel Maude
Fisher in 1903.
Claims: One of the first settlers in the district, came with
parents in 1880.

Cory, Richard Sr.
Biography: Born Devonshire, England. Married Mary Anne Frain in
1857.
Claims: Moved to Canada in 1870. Winnipeg in 1879. One of the
first settlers in the district. Plowed the first furrow in the district
on 19-7-17 in 1879.

Cory, Thomas
Biography: Born Devonshire, England, Married Lucillia Sanders in 1858.
Claims: Came to Canada in 1861. One of the first settlers in the
district (1880). Four children: Fred, Selena, Will & Milt.

Downie, James
Biography: Born 1839, Scotland. Married Emma Kirkwood.
Claims: Carpenter in Edinburgh. Homeseaded in 1881. Well
established farm. Good account of pioneer life.

Elliott, Thomas
Biography: Brother of Jabez, James and Joshua. From Port Hope ON.
Married Elizabeth Bragg.
Claims: Arrived in 1879 with Gus Cory (Son of Richard) and
Richard and James Kinley.
Chose homesteads for his three brothers. The region soon became known
as the “Elliott Settlement”, later Elliott’s Siding.
Served as Justice of the Peace after moving in to Wawanesa. Retired to
Vancouver.

Fowler, Frank O.
Biography: Seaforth On.
Claims: One of the first settlers in the district. Came with his
father, W.O. in 1880. Reeve in the 1890’s. Built the house later used
as the boarding house by the Wawanesa Mutual. Insurance agent 1892-95.
Manager of the Manitoba Elevator Co. 1893.

Biography:
Claims: Souris City Pioneer. Councillor & Reeve 1886 – involved in
efforts to attract a railway. Founding member of the local branch of
the Manitoba and North West Farmer’s Co-operative and Protective
Union. 1883. Assessor for Oakland.

Ingram, Isaac
Biography: Born in Ireland. Married Georgina Matheson
Claims: Farmed in Woodstock ON. Sought gold in Montana. Brought
family west overland via Chicago to Wawanesa in 1882 and became a
successful farmer. Charter member of the Wawanesa Masonic Lodge.

Leachman, Charles
Biography: Born 1854, London Eng. Married Mary Ann Smith. Retired
to Wawanesa. Died 1920.
Claims: One of the first settlers in the district. 1880. Built
stone house which, as of 2013, was inhabited by his great grandson.
Served as Magistrate appointed to County Clerk. President of the
Brandon Agricultural Society.
