Claims: Homesteaded 1881. Worked in Winnipeg that winter – one job was moving the Countess of Dufferin across the river.  Returned to area to start farming in 1882. Helped build the Melira United Church – hauling stone for the foundation and helping with the construction. Two terms on Municipal Council. Store in Tilston 1907.

Graham, R.M.

Claims: Mr. Graham arrived in 1882 and set up a store and post office in 1883, followed by a blacksmith’s shop that he rented out. The site, known also as “The Corners”, became the village of Manchester – soon changed to Melita. In 1891 he bought a store in Melita from Coughill.

Captain Large built the Empress of Ireland, a steam powered boat that did saw service on the Souris River in 1909, 1910. The boat was moved to Brandon and re-named the Assiniboine Queen and used to tranport coal to a bridge construction site east of Brandon.

Mr. Large openned a machine shop in Waskada before moving east in 1914 where he was a supervisor in a munitions factory.

Some time later he recovered the remains of the H.M. Schooner “Nancy” from Nancy Island. (Fur trader converted to a warship for the War of 1812)
