Claims: Auditor of the Birmingham Railway – quit to come to Canada in
1881
Came to Twp. 2 R. 28 in 1882. Graduate of Oxford University.
Brought a load of lumber with him from Brandon – with oxen. Played the
violin and taught music. Councilor -Ward 3, 1884.
Had a boat built in 1904 by D. Lamont – blacksmith shop

Brown, William Henry
Biography: Died 1929
Claims: Farmer – 1883 NE 22-4-27. Donated land for Brown School –
picnic often on their farm – Sec. Treas for years – teachers boarded at
their house. Brown School picnic held at their farm

Dobbyn. John
Biography: Born
Claims: With son Richard John, came in 1881. Mr. Dobbyn had
“Dobbyn City” surveyed on 36-3-27 in anticipation of a coming rail
line. In 1905 at 80 yrs. started Melita Brick & Tile Co. after
discovering red brick clay near the river. Involved his son
Richard, Charles D. Lamont, Johnston & Pope.

Snyder, John Wesley
Biography: Born 1856; Died 1952
Claims: In the fall of 1881 John was one of first four to file on
homesteads west of the Souris River. Purchased the first binder in the
district. Trustee and Sec. Tres. For Sourisford School
Sons all farmed in the district.

Sterling, Edward
Biography: Born 1861, ON. Died 1949
Claims: Homesteaded 1881. Worked in Winnipeg that winter – one job was
moving the Countess of Dufferin across the river. Returned to
area to start farming in 1882. Helped build the Melira United Church –
hauling stone for the foundation and helping with the construction. Two
terms on Municipal Council. Store in Tilston 1907.

Biography: Born 1856, ON.
Claims: Arrived in 1879 with with James Kinley, and Alfred Dugay
Operated a ferry. Clerk R.M. of Arthur – nearly 50 yrs.
One arm amputated after a gunshot accident that happened while he was
operating his ferry
