Belmont is Great Wheat Growing District
Growth and Development of
The Town of Belmont
Although Belmont does not rightly come in the scope of our Argyle
his¬tory we have endeavored to glean a few of the highlights of its
prog¬ress and mention a few of the men who pioneered the district.
Mr. Malcolm Matheson came into this district about 1883. He batched
with Mr. J. L. Smith the first year. They made a number of trips to
Brandon on foot to purchase supplies
Money was very scarce and every¬one was equally hard up with his
neighbor. Mr. Matheson recalls with a chuckle one pioneer who went to
court his girl in his bare feet. They married and were quite happy.
At present Mr. Matheson is very active and enjoying good health.
Mr. Roger Brown came into the district in 1889. He helped build the
first stores in Baldur, Greenway and Belmont. At 16 years of age he
work¬ed on the construction gang putting the first railway line through
to Wawanesa.
