You energetic fool! You just might be on to something.

You put the canoe into the water, courageously leveling the bow (you know - the front part!) into the raging current. Okay - so you just might have to drop a leaf into the water to be sure just which way the raging current is headed.

In any case you step into the canoe and, as senior officer on board, take up the steering position in the stern (the back end!) of the vessel. Bernie leans into that paddle and pushes off with five or six mightly stokes before pulling up his paddle and beginning an investigation of the cooler. Paddling is thirsty work!

Choices:

Your funding allows for a 60 day expedition. Should you continue this hectic pace you'll be high and dry at the legendary headwaters of the mighty Souris River System before the grant runs out. Then it would be hard to find a good excuse not to return - DOWNSTREAM!

On the other hand, you could carefully resist the impulse to paddle energetically, thus allowing time for careful inspection and scientific exploration - not to mention wiener roasts on the bank!
