The Shanawan School District was established formally in July 1908 and a one-room schoolhouse operated here, at NE27-7-1E, in the Rural Municipality of Macdonald.
Among the teachers of Shanawan School were Miss Stella Kelly (1909), Miss Kathleen Wooster, Ralph R. Mallock, Miss Troman, Miss Hazel Manwaring, Miss Florence Young, Miss Fannie O’Brien, Miss Aikenhead, Miss Christiansen, Miss Wilson, Miss Johnson, Miss Cavanaugh (1917), Miss Silver (1919), Miss O. Swanton (1919), Miss Loyden Johnston, Miss Winnifred Puttee, Miss Anna Horrocks, Miss Florence Kellett (1921), Miss Gertrude Mabley (1922), Miss Edith Campbell (1923), Miss Edith McLean (1923-1924), Miss Eunice Linton (1924-1926), Miss Daisy Rhind (1926-1927), Mrs. G. H. Thompson (1927-1928), Miss Nettie Babiak (1928-1930), Miss Alice Wheatland (1930-1931), Miss Margaret Junkin (1931-1935), Miss Adelene Manness (1935-1937), Miss Lydia Dyck (1937-1938), Anthony Pasieczka (1938-1940), Miss Irene McMahon (1940-1941), Miss Eleonore Neufeld (1941-1943), Miss Helen Derksen (1943-1944), Miss Freda Lang (1944-1945), and Miss Adina Goertzen (1949-1950).
The school closed in June 1950. Its district was dissolved in 1953 and the students went to Macdonald Consolidated School No. 2401. A sign, erected by the municipality in September 2014, commemorates the school.
