Historic Sites of Manitoba: Schwartz House (245 Tenth Avenue NW, Altona)

This is the former home of businessman Johann Schwartz in Altona, once the largest one in town. Built in 1902, the house was located on Fifth Avenue NW. Many years later, it served as a residence for students of the Elim Bible Institute. Purchased by an organization known as the Schwartz Heritage Group, it was moved it to this location and restored. The building was used for art exhibitions and art classes then, for a number of years, as a Bed & Breakfast. In 2004, the Town of Altona assumed responsibility for it and, the following year, with assistance of the Friesens Corporation, the building became an art gallery known as “Gallery in the Park”. The building, a municipally-designated heritage site as of 1988, opened on 25 July 2008.
