Around 1981, this barn in the Rural Municipality of Macdonald was featured in a Manitoba Co-operator series on rural buildings. The original caption for the photograph is given below.
Part of this barn is almost 80 years old, some is about 25 years old, and some is only 17 years old. Like barns throughout North America, this one near LaSalle has been added onto and subtracted from to reflect different periods of agriculture in the past century. Built in the early 1900s by Osias Rochan, the original structure was 34 feet by 48 feet and provided the surrounding area with livery and livestock boarding services until 1959. With an addition built on, the operation then changed over to dairy under new owner Robert DeVos. This continued until recent years although the buildings and property are now vacant and for sale to make way for town expansion. The farm backs onto LaSalle River, which was originally known as Riviere Sale to early Manitoba settlers who had found the river to have a strong alkali taste. According to historians, it was originally shown to be called Bad Water Rivulet on 1921 maps while on 1965 maps it is shown as Salt or Stinking River.
No information is available on the present status of the building.
