Historic Sites of Manitoba: Petracek Monument (Shorncliffe, Municipality of Bifrost-Riverton)

A monument near the former village of Shorncliffe in the Municipality of Bifrost-Riverton commemorates pioneer Emil Petracek (1873-1948). He immigrated from Bohemia (Czech Republic) to Canada in 1900. After first going to the Brokenhead district, he relocated to this area in 1912 where he excelled at grain farming and specialized in cattle and horses, providing veterinary services in the area. He supplied lumber to build the St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church in Arborg. His wife Victoria was instrumental in getting the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church built in Shorncliffe. The monument lists Petracek’s seven children born by two wives.
