When Mennonites settled the East Reserve, in what is now the Rural Municipality of Hanover, farms were set up in small villages with communally-owned fields and pasturelands arranged in long narrow farmsteads. The result was a large number of short-lived villages with graveyards. This Chortitzer Mennonite Conference cemetery was established at the north end of the village of Osterwick that was started in 1874. A second cemetery is situated at the south end.
