A wooden grain elevator at Newton, on the CNR Gladstone Subdivision in the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie, was built in 1910 by the Manitoba Elevator Commission. Leased to the Grain Growers Grain Company in 1912, it was subleased to the McMillan Grain Company from 1918 to 1924, when it was purchased by United Grain Growers. Dismantled and rebuilt in 1935, two temporary annexes were constructed beside it in 1940. One was sold to the Milltown Hutterite Colony in 1945 and the other was destroyed by a storm in 1948. A larger crib annex replaced them in 1951. Rendered inviable by increased costs of operation, the elevator was closed on 31 July 1972 and later removed from the site.
