This is one of the best surviving examples in Manitoba of a gas house, where flammable acetylene gas was produced for home and business lighting around Manitou using pellets of calcium carbide mixed with water. When hydroelectric power was brought here in 1927, the gas house was no longer needed so it was renovated into a private residence. The building still contains the large, circular vat where the gas was generated.
