He immigrated to Canada in 1948 and married Louise Huebert (1930-2022) in 1951. They lived at 750 Home Street in Winnipeg and had a daughter and two sons. He established the Toews Photo Studio (also known as W. Toews Studio and Walter Toews Studio) and his work flourished between 1955 and 1971. He served as President of the Professional Photographers of Manitoba (?-?). He died at the Concordia Hospital on 28 September 1971 and was buried in the Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
