Born at Norwich, Ontario in 1866, he came to Winnipeg in 1905 and, four years later, partnered with Lewis B. Foote in the studio of Foote and James. He did studio work including family portraits while Foote did commercial photography. The partnership was dissolved in 1932. He and wife Rosalie Martha Slade (1870-1947) had a daughter, Hilda Elizabeth James (1906-1994). The family lived at 125 Canora Street. He died at the Misericordia Hospital on 23 January 1963 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
