Memorable Manitobans: Petrus G. W. A. “Peter” Lommerse (1926-1993)

Physician.

Born in England on 13 October 1926, son of Dutch immigrants Petrus Gijsbertus Wilhelmus Lommerse (1883-1958) and Catharina Snoek (1883-1944), he began a medical career in London then worked in Tanzania before moving to Manitoba to join the Manitoba Department of Health and Public Welfare in 1958. He organized a health centre for Metis people at The Pas then practiced for seven years at Dunrea. He moved to Killarney in 1970 and worked here until retirement when he moved to British Columbia. He was President of the Manitoba Medical Association (1974-1975). He retired to British Columbia. He married midwife Iraida “Ira” Schnatze (1924-2007) and they had two sons and two daughters. He died at Sooke, British Columbia on 18 August 1993.
