Manitoba Business: Topper Grain Company

The Topper Grain Company of Winnipeg was relatively short-lived, operating from around 1922 until it was merged into the Federal syndicate in 1929.

The company was involved in 68 grain elevator transactions during its eight-year lifespan: 34 purchases or builds and 34 sales, having a maximum of around 28 elevators at any one time. All of these elevators were in Saskatchewan while Frank Topper operated out of his head office in Winnipeg. Fourteen elevators were built by the company, sixteen were purchased from the Saskatchewan and Western Elevator Company—Topper's former employer—and four came from Southern Grain, a small company based in Truax, Saskatchewan. Southern’s four elevators were built between 1912 and 1915 and were sold to Topper in 1926.
