Manitoba Business: Lindenberg Seeds

This Brandon-based horticultural products firm was established in 1935 by brothers Arwid Ludwig Lindenberg and William Bruno Lindenberg, later joined by brother Arthur Edwin Lindenberg. Based originally on the family farm near Rapid City, in 1938 they opened a retail store in Rapid City to sell vegetable and flower seeds, and bees and beekeeping supplies.

The business grew through direct and mail order sales so, in 1941, they moved it to Brandon, and located at 821 Princess Avenue. Seven years later, needing more space, they moved next door to 825 Princess Avenue. In 1958, they combined the two stores into one larger space. However, the business continued to grow so, in 1966, they purchased nearby land on which a gasoline filling station had once stood. In the Fall of 1965, the firm’s present building at 803 Princess Avenue, designed by the architectural firm of Ward and Macdonald and built by contractors Reismeyer-Vansanten, was constructed.

In the 1960s, in addition to its retail store, the company produced registered seed at its original farm near Rapid City as well as on a 480-acre farm near Brandon. It operated a seed cleaning plant (started in 1945, expanded in 1955), feed mill (constructed in 1963), and a general farm supply house on First Street. A former brewery building east of the First Street Bridge was acquired in 1958 for use in storing grass and grain seeds.
