Miller A.W. Snider

The Wawanesa Flour Mill was built in 1895 by A.W. Snider and D.N. Russell. It was located at the east end of Park Street. Mr. Snider bought out Mr. Russell in 1903, and continued to operate the mill for many years, producing, initially three brands of flour – “Hungarian Patent”, “Family Patent” and “Strong Bakers”. Later “Pride of Oakland”, was produced as the only brand, a high quality flour made only from No. 1 hard wheat.

In addition to producing flour for the market, Snider provided gristing service, as well as rolling oats and barley for animal feed.

The mill served the community until it was destroyed by fire in 1949.

The Mill Bonus

Communities valued the services of a grist mill and generally offered a “bonus” or cash incentive to attract a mill.
