The World

1901: Queen Victoria dies, Jan. 22. Edward the VII reigns.
1901: Marconi sends the first radio signal across the Atlantic.
1903: Ford Motor Co. established to manufacture automobiles


Canada

1902: First Canadian “production” car built by Good Brothers in Kitchener ON.
1903: Canada loses the Alaska Boundary Dispute
1904: Marquis wheat strain developed in Ottawa Experimental Farm
1905: Saskatchewan and Alberta enter confederation.
1909: First heavier than air flight in Canada, with pilot J.A.D. McCurdy. First Grey Cup Game.
May 15, 1909: An earthquake is felt across the prairies.



Manitoba

1901: Manitoba’s first Hydro-electric plant opens on the Little Saskatchewan River northwest of Brandon.  
1906: Manitoba farmers organize the “Grain Growers’ Grain Company” with shares available at $25. For any farmer wanting to join.

1908: Manitoba Government Telephones takes over the telephone service.


The Wawanesa Area

1900

First 1.0.0.F. hall built.
Anglican Church constructed.
1901 Wawanesa Band organized.

1902

Race track built — still in use in 1988.

1903

C.N.R. train bridge double-decked for other traffic.

Wawanesa's third newspaper is born  - "The Independant".

1904

Second rink built — a metal structure on the agricultural grounds.
Second Post Office building built - north of E. Bain Jackson's.

1905

Telephone Service comes to Wawanesa.

1907

Bandstand constructed at south end of 4th Street.

Lumber yard already established.

1908

First motion pictures in Wawanesa.

"Wawanesa Independent" is published by Fred Batty.

The west "black" bridge is built — still in use in 1988.

Fire destroys Hollands Hardware, Boyd’s barbershop, Gorries’ Harness Shop

Dr. F.W. Jackson comes to Wawanesa

Charles Leachman and William Anderson purchase one of the first gasoline-powered threshing machine outfits.

 
1909

Aircraft landed on Ellis farm by "Dare-Devil Blakeley".
Banting Siding elevator burned.
First curling bonspiel was held.
Wawanesa Village Incorporated. C.D. Keer was the first mayor.
