1901: Queen Victoria dies, Jan. 22. Edward the VII reigns.

May 15, 1909: an Earthquake is felt across the prairies.



Manitoba


1901: Manitoba’s first Hydro-electric plant opens on the Little Saskatchewan River northwest of Brandon. 
1901: Queen Victoria dies, Jan. 22. Edward the VII reigns.
1906: Manitoba farmers organize the “Grain Growers’ Grain Company” with shares available at $25. For any farmer wanting to join.

1908: Manitoba Government Telephones takes over the telephone service.


Melita & Area

1900

Fire hall built – part of it still exists at 51 Maple Street.

Canada Customs Office established.

On June 27, 1900 Ida Edwards married A.E. (Arthur) Fry, an influential Hartney businessman. The wedding took place in the Melita Baptist Church. Standing with them were Ida’s sister  Alice and her fiancée, Thomas Hopkins, who not to be outdone, announced their marriage at the wedding reception at the Edwards home and tied the knot then and there !

1903

Lawn Tennis Club established.

1905

- Arthur divided into three municipalities as in the present day, Albert, Edward & Arthur (Range  26 & 27; t

- Local telephone service begins. The  Melita-Arthur Telephone Company  built an office at  116 Souris Street.

- Large addition built on Melita School

- The Melita Brick & Tile Co. established in 1905 after 80 year old pioneer John Dobbyn discovered a clay deposit west  of the river an south of Highway #3. His son R.J. Dobbyn was the first manager.

1906  

- Northern Bank built. 132 Main. In 1908 it became Northern Crown Bank (amalgamated with Crown). Became Royal Bank in 1919. H.H. Richards, the first manager of the bank owned the first car in town.
- in 1968 the building became the R.M. of Arthur office.

- Coultervale Church (South Antler Presbyterian) opened Nov. 1906.

- 1907 IOOF Hall built at Main Street and Souris by Johnstone & Pope

- Coulter Methodist (United)  Church opened. Aug. 25. P93

 
1908  

- Vault built and “Improvements” made at the cemetery. A 2-storey Chapel/Vault with storage rack for coffins in lower level  - trap door access

- C-Squadron 12 Manitoba Dragoons formed in April

- Manitoba Government Telephones takes over the telephone service.

1909

- Empress of Ireland, built by “Captain” Rolston Large, launched on the Souris River. The intention was to offer service from Napinka to Scotia N.D. Tickets for the 1910 season exist. It was moved to Brandon later that year.

- Bede Siding established.
