"Stopping" or "Half-Way" Houses that served as road-side hotels for pioneer travellers, were quickly replaced by "modern" and substantial hotels once the railway arrived and towns were established. Such hotels were built for the railway era, located downtown near the station. The improvement in roads and road maintenance after WW 2 meant fewer overnight stays and these large old hotels fell out of use.
