George
Winram
George Winram, second son William Winram, came with the family from
Staynor, Ontario in 1878 and settled in Mountain City, Manitoba.
William Winram, George’s father had come from England before living in
Staynor, Ontario, where he married his Scotch wife, Mary
Bannerman. The family farmed at Mountain City and George’s father
was a member of the Manitoba Legislature for Manitou and for some years
was Speaker of the House.
He also belonged to the Masonic Lodge and a church near the family home
was dedicated to his memory.
On 1894 George married Mary Foley. The Foley family, came from
Bownmanville, Ontario and settled in the Manitou district about the
same time as the Winrams.
George had four children. Alicia married Lendrum Worden from the
Fairhall district, north of Killarney, also a pioneer
family. Anne, Mrs. Edward Burriss, Florida. Herman, a
First World War veteran died in Vancouver, 1953. Ralph, the only
one born in Killarney.
George Winram travelled for an implement firm when the family lived in
Manitou and Pilot Mound., before moving to Killarney about 1902, where
he established his implement business.
About 1905 he built the red brick house on Clark Street and lived there
until going to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he died in 1928.
The family belonged to the Anglican Church and took an active part in
its activities.

Grampa built first frame house which was a meeting place for church,
business and social gatherings.
Most folks coming west were met at Emerson by Wm. Winram or his son,
James. They were usually put up at his home overnight, or till
they got started on their way.
Home still standing; excellent condition, oak casing and beams, etc.

Church on this property, built 1892. In memory of Hon. Wm Winram
(fund started by Masonic Lodge, contributed to by members of both
parties. Church named St. Mary’s because the church in
_______ where Mr. Winram was christened and confirmed
was St. Mary’s.
