Thomas
William Hillier born in Lamaline, Newfoundland on September 29, 1859
one of a large family of English and Irish parentage.
He came
to Manitoba in 1881, working on the railroad enroute, then as a farm
laborer to gain farming experience. In 1884 he took out a
homestead on section 14-3-18 Turtle Mountain Municipality.
On
Christmas Day 1890, he married Martha Louise Fairhall, at the home of
her parents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fairhall. They lived on their farm
in the Oakridge district for 43 years, retiring to Killarney in
1933. Eleven children were born, three dying in infancy; Annie
(Mrs. E. Burrows), Victoria, B. C.; Ida (Mrs. Turner,) Killarney; Fred
of Brandon; Dr. Arthur of Oakville, Ontario; Phoebe (Mrs. W. Hicks),
Creston, B. C.; Harry of Brandon; Alice (Mrs. Almer Hicks) NInga; and
Robert of Toronto. Mr. and Mrs. Hillier celebrated their Golden
Wedding December 25, 1947.
Mrs.
Hillier passed away May 19, 19947, followed scarcely two years later by
her husband, who died after a short illness on March 21, 1949.
