Reuben
Cross
Mr.
Reuben Cross was one of the pioneer merchants of Killarney. Born
in Collingwood, Ontario, he travelled west as a young man as far as
Manitou, Manitoba, and a couple of years later, moved on to Holmfield
where he was engaged as manager of a small general store. While
there he met and married Annie Armstrong.
About
the year 1895 he went into business in Killarney, opening a general
store which for that time, was considered large and up-to-date with its
wide variety of merchandise. It was a friendly store, reflecting
the personality of its manager, and his sense of good will toward the
customers – particularly those who had to drive long miles to town in
every kind of weather to do their shopping.
Mr.
and
Mrs. Cross were both devoted members of the Methodist Church. For
some years Mr. Cross served on the Board, and his fluency as a speaker
made his leadership felt in all departments of church work.
Perhaps dearest to this heart were the prayer meetings.
Their
home was always known for its hospitality.
In
1905, they went to Spokane, Washington, where Mrs. Cross died in 1939
and Reuben Cross two years later.
