Laird Hope) 1879. Died Feb. 12, 1926
Claims: Homesteaded in 1878. Walked to the region with Laird George
Hope. “One of the best Shorthorn herds in Canada.” First Postmaster.
Early leader - Presbyterian services held in his home 1880-81.
Councvillor & Reeve. Posthumously inducted into the Manitoba
Agricultural Hall of Fame.

Boles, Harry
Biography: Born Sept. 13, 1855, Hatherleigh, Devonshire, England.
Married Ursula Foster on Feb. 14, 1877.
Claims: Homesteaded in 1878. Good account of the trip to Mb. and
setting up a farm. Participated in the first Carberry Fair - 1883.
Raised 14 children. Reeve, President of the Ag. Society.

Hope, George ”Laird”
Biography: Married
Claims: First homestead in the Fairview District. Called the first
meeting of settlers to seek a Post Office. 1st President of the
Norfolk Agricultural Society. First Presbyterian services held in his
home.

McKinnon, James
Biography:
Claims: First settler. Came from Galt Ontario in 1877. James
McKinnon is credited with being the first settler of the Carberry
Plains in 1877.

McLaren, Malcolm
Biography:
Claims: Malcolm, and his sons John, James, Duncan, Dugald and
Archibald, came to the Fairview area in 1878 and became prominent
citizens and farmers. Archibald was too you to file for a homestead.
The McLaren house may have been the first house built on the plains.

Robinson, Harriet Susan
Biography: Born June 18, 1877, New Windsoe, Berkshire, Eng. Married
Richard Robinson Feb. 7, 1900. Died Nov. 23, 1859.
Claims: In 1886 she was one of 30000 children brought to Canada
by Barnardo Homes. She was the first “little” sent to Manitoba.
Previous to that only teenagers had come. At age 16 she had to earn her
own living - working as a “Mother's Helper” for Dr. Shaw, and
delivering prescriptions on her bicycle.
