McLellan, James
Biography: Born 1839 Scotland
Claims: On first Argyle council – first meeting held on his property.
Had a home with a floor of oak boards sawn at the Walsh sawmill – site
of many dances.
Bought the first steam threshing outfit in the district in 1888. Wigton
school named after his birthplace – he was one of first trustees. His
wife was one of the first female settlers.

Playfair, A.W.
Biography: Born 1850 ON
Claims: Settled 1880
The first Post Office in the Otenaw district was in the A. W. Playfair
house.
Appointed Commissioner by Premier Norquay - swore in the first Argyle
Council

Stark, William
Biography:
Claims: One of first settlers in the Roseberry District. 1879. First
Clerk of the R.M. of Argyle 1882-1888. First house in Roseberry
Distreict. First Church services held there until1889 – then the school
was used.

Strang, Peter
Biography: Born 1856 ON; Died 1934
Claims: Mr. Strang was an early settler in the Moropano district at the
west end of Rock Lake.
Neighbours James McClellan, James Craig, John Porter &
Sam Kernighan helped build a barn and this shack. They had the skill of
making dovetail corners
Reeve and Justice of the Peace in 1887
In Dec. 1888 he was sent to Winnipeg by his fellow councilors to
interview the Premier (Greenway) to ensure that the Northern Pacific
Railway would come through Argyle.
Left Argyle in 1894 became a Minister
