Goodman, Harry
Biography:   
Claims: One of the first blacksmiths in westerm Manitoba. SEttled at Souris City (near Wawanesa) in the early 1880's.
Operated a Blacksmith shop in Baldur in 1890

Biography:   Son of A.R. Hamilton – Governor of Bornes and Sarawak (Malaysia)
Claims: Est. farm, “Pithcorie”. Active in community. Councillor.

Montague, John
Biography:    Died 1914
Claims: Surveyor & machinist. Came to Marringhurst District in 1878. By 1879 had explored the district and knew the legal description of most quarters. He located farms for settlers (for a fee) using a map which he had created. Associated with many early settlers such as  John Wilson and  John Cumming. Moved to Neelin area. Established a sawmill. Sold that site (which would alter become the village of Neelin) to Joseph Neelin.

Neelin, Joseph


Biography: Born 1859; Died 1918
Claims: Homesteaded 29-3-14 in 1881 - home of Post Office until 1905. Bought SW 19-3-14 from John Monague about 1896 – became site of Village of Neelin. First Justice of the Peace for area.

Olafson, Jon


Biography: Born 1829 Iceland; Died 1914
Claims: Settled in Sandy Bar (Riverton) in 1879. In 1882 claimed land at Bru.
Home served as Post Office – he was Postmaster until 1894 – son Albert Oliver took over until 1929
Donated Land For Bru Cemetery. Built Hola School.

Oliver, Albert Sr.
Biography: Born 1862 Iceland; Died 1929
Claims: Postmaster from 1894  - 1929. Organized the Bru Band (Bandmaster) and was Choirmaster of Bru Church. Oliver School named for him. Bru Hall built on his farm.

Parsonage, Henry & Elizabeth



Biography: Born 1855, England
Claims Commisioned by John Taylor (Icelandic Agent) as a guide for Icelandic settlers who arrived at Port Hope and were bound for New Iceland in 1875. Everett became close friends with Sigurdur Christopherson, Skafti Aranson, Kristjan Jonsson, John Taylor and others. In 1880 Everett was established in Pilot Mound he helped several of those friend find homes in Argyle.
In 1881 his step-brother Henry Josiah Parsonage settled in Argyle on SW 30-6-13. Six generations have lived in Argyle so far.

Playfair, Mary
Biography:  Born ON.
Claims: Teacher at Otenaw / Wolesley school on Playfair homestead. Informal nursing help in absence of a doctor. One of the original group of women working for women’s suffrage. First female school trustee in Manitoba.

Biography: Born 1855. Died 1916
Claims: Son of John, area pioneer – came west in 1879.  Councilor
Leader in forming the Grain Growers Association – director for 6 years.
