Lawyer, MLA (1995-1999).
Born at Winnipeg on 18 August 1944, son of Walter Carman Newman and Jean Machray (1907-1998), he worked as a lawyer and was President of the Rotary Club of Winnipeg and Manitoba Chamber of Commerce, in addition to chairing the Manitoba Cardiac Institute Foundation and Capital Facilities Fund.
Elected to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly at the 1995 general election, he served as Minister of Energy and Mines (1997-1999) and Minister of Northern Affairs (1997-1999) and, during his term in office, was made a Queen's Counsel (1998). Defeated at the 1999 general election, he returned to private law practice.
