Memorable Manitobans: Anne Campbell MacVicar (c1940-2024)

Nurse, community activist.

Born around 1940, only child of Angus Archibald MacVicar (1889-1954) and Verna “Bonnie” Sissons (1897-1992), she was raised on the family farm and attended school in Portage la Prairie. She moved to Winnipeg to train as a nurse at the Misericordia Hospital, graduating in 1959.

She worked as a nurse and, on 9 September 1961, married Henry John Selwood at Portage la Prairie. They lived in Montreal (Quebec) and Australia before returning to Winnipeg in 1970. They had two daughters before separating in 1987. Active as a member of the Centennial Farm Committee in the Manitoba Historical Society, she received its Douglas Kemp Award twice (2004, 2022). She supported arts organizations including the Winnipeg Youth Orchestra.

She died at Winnipeg on 24 July 2024 and was buried in the Portage Hillside Cemetery.
