James Arthur “Jim” Ernst

MLA (1986-1988), MLA (1988-1990), MLA (1990-1995), MLA (1995-1997).

Born at Winnipeg on 19 November 1942, son of Frank Luther Ernst (1903-1989) and Stella Sarah Bryson (1909-1989), as a city councillor he served on the Historical Buildings and Resources Committee (1979-1980) and the Winnipeg Housing Rehabilitation Corporation (1978, 1984-1985). He was elected to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly at the 1986 general election and was re-elected in the 1988, 1990, and 1995 elections. He served as Minister of Industry, Trade and Technology (1988-1991), Minister of Business Development and Tourism (1988-1991), Minister of Urban Affairs (1991-1993), Minister of Housing (1991-1993), Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs (1993-1997), Government House Leader (1993-1997), and Vice-Chair of the Treasury Board (1993-1997) before resigning from office in October 1997.
