Manitoba Business: Mitchell Grain Company

The Winnipeg-based Mitchell Grain Company began in 1918 as the Mitchell Hay Company, a Track Buyer and Commission Merchant. By 1919, it had been renamed as the Mitchell Hay and Grain Company and it owned one grain elevator, a 30,000-bushel Interior Private Terminal Elevator on the CNR in Winnipeg. It was enlarged to 65,000 bushels by 1922.

Also in 1921-22 a 30,000 bu country elevator was being operated/leased in La Riviere MB – previously with Adanac Grain, Chalmers and Watson, and back in 1916-17 the Grain Growers’ Grain Co.! Needless to say back in 1911 it showed up as an MEC elevator, built in 1892 and purchased from the Farmers’ Elevator Company in 1910. It’s a small grain world! It was returned to the Manitoba Government for the 1922-23 season. I guess it was not a good elevator and it disappeared c1926. Mitchell Grain had no elevators left but remained as a Track and Comm merchant.
