MHS Film Night 2009: “Governor Ashley Cooper Visits The Canadian Arctic”

This two-hour silent (with subtitles) documentary film from 1934 shows HBC Governor Ashley Cooper’s tour of the eastern Arctic aboard the RMS Nascopie. The Manitoba Historical Society has obtained permission from the Hudson’s Bay Company Archives for a rare public showing of this commercially produced historic film. Commentary will be provided by Fred Ford, grandson of the Inuit translator on the expedition, and by Professor John Selwood for the MHS.

Doors will open at 5:30 PM and the film will start at 7:00 PM. Food and beverages (including beer and wine) are available on the premises and may be taken into the theatre, where all seats are equipped with mini-tables.

Admission is $8.00 for MHS members, $10.00 for non-members.

As seating is limited, your attendance may be assured in advance by calling the MHS Office at 204-947-0559. Payment can be made through the office by Visa, Mastercard or cheque. Tickets will also be available at the door on the evening of the event.
