In 1906, as the population of Manitoba and its two new sister provinces, Saskatchewan and Alberta, grew with the arrival of immigrants from around the world, the Canadian government carried out a special census.
Release of the data from this 1906 census, scheduled to be released publicly in 1998, was blocked by the Chief Statistician of Canada. Following a court challenge and a concerted letter- and email-writing campaign, the Honourable Allan Rock, Minister of Industry, announced on 24 January 2003 that the 1906 census would be released immediately to the National Archives of Canada. In turn, National Archivist Ian Wilson announced that the entire census had been scanned and is now available on the web site of the National Archives.
