Memorable Manitobans: Oscar Andrew Wurster (c1884-1963)

Educator.

Born in the German Empire around 1884, he immigrated to Canada around 1904 and became a teacher in Manitoba. His career including teaching at Niverville School (?-?), Glenella School (c1912), Kronsfeld School (1914-1915), Golden Bay School (1917-1918), Arran School (1919-1920), and was Principal of Bradley School (1925-1929) before teaching in the broader Fort Garry area (c1930). He later taught at Whitemouth School (1945-1950; Vice-Principal 1948-1950) and Oldenburg School (1950-1954) before sailing for Germany aboard the SS Queen Elizabeth in August 1954, some 50 years after having left his homeland. He later returned to Manitoba and resumed teaching at Decker School (1955-1956).

On 27 April 1911, he married Gertrude Margaret Wallace (c1890-1965) at Winnipeg and they had four children: Marjory Wurster (1912-2002, wife of Cecil Robert “Bob” Brennand [?-1949], Harold Payne [?-1957], and Stanley Schofield [?-1991]), Helen Wurster (c1914-2003, wife of Mr. Wallace), Arthur Daniel Wallace Wurster (1916-?), and Dorothea “Dorothy” Wurster (1922-2007, wife of F. D. Mahaffy). In retirement, he lived at 1128 Fairfield Avenue in Fort Garry.

He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 23 April 1963.
