Born Beamsville, Ontario, 5 January 1871. Came to Manitoba, 1881. Commenced career as clerk, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, 1885. Married Edna Elo Mawhinney of Holland, Manitoba on 9 October 1902. Society: COF. Recreation: curling. Liberal; Presbyterian. Address: 26 Steele Block, Winnipeg.

In 1911, Merrill was Manager of the Karn Morris Piano & Organ Company, 337 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg.
